How to get to K'gari Fraser Island

Fraser Island (K’gari) is accessible only by ferry or barge—no bridge connects it to the mainland. Here’s a breakdown of how to get there depending on your starting point and travel style:

🚗 By Car + Ferry

• From Brisbane (3.5–4 hours drive):

  • Drive north via the Bruce Highway to River Heads (near Hervey Bay) or Rainbow Beach.

  • From River Heads, take the Kingfisher Bay Ferry or Fraser Venture barge.

  • From Inskip Point (near Rainbow Beach), take the Manta Ray barge to Hook Point.

• Vehicle Requirements:

  • high-clearance 4WDs are recommended on K'gari (Fraser Island).

  • All vehicle access (via River Heads) but driving around the island itself is unsuitable by standard car

  • Book ferry/barge tickets in advance, especially during holidays.

🚌 By Bus

• Premier and Greyhound buses run daily from Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, and Cairns to Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach.

• From there, transfer to ferry/barge services.

✈️ By Air

• Fly into Hervey Bay Airport (HVB) from Brisbane or Sydney.

  • Airlines: QantasLink, Virgin Australia.

• From the airport, take a short drive to River Heads for ferry access.

🌿 About Us – Melissa & David

We’re Melissa and David—partners in life, adventure, and now hosts of Banksia Hideaway. Our love for K’gari (Fraser Island) began in the late 1990s, when we started making regular trips to this breathtaking island. Over the years, it became more than a destination—it became part of our story.

In 2019, we found our own piece of paradise: a beautifully styled villa tucked within the grounds of Kingfisher Bay Resort. With full access to resort facilities and restaurants, it quickly became our family’s go-to spot for long weekends and island escapes. Now, we’re delighted to share it with guests who value nature, comfort, and connection.

Melissa grew up on the Sunshine Coast and works as a Social Worker, specializing in Financial Counselling. Her calm, caring nature shines through in the thoughtful touches around the villa. David moved from Sydney to Brisbane at age five and has long held a passion for 4WD adventures—especially the annual Fraser Island clean-up trips that deepened his love for the land. He runs Meierkat Enterprises, a local handyman and pest control business, and brings practical know-how and pride of place to every detail of Banksia Hideaway.

Together, we’ve created a space that reflects our values: nature-inspired, welcoming, and grounded in the beauty of K’gari. We hope you feel the same sense of peace and belonging here that we do.
